The Matterhorn of the Rockies lies 60 km south of Canmore, Alberta. This majestic peak is the highest mountain in Mt Assiniboine Provincial Park. It takes three days to climb and the cost will be based on a 3 or 4 day excursion. Four days gives an extra day for bad weather.
A beautiful 8-minute helicopter flight from Mt. Shark takes you to Assiniboine Lodge. Alternatively, it is an 8 hour hike in.
Helicopter access:
The helicopter pad is at Mt. Shark in Kananaskis, a one-hour drive south of Canmore.
Difficulty:
Mainly a scramble with two short steeper sections of 5.5 climbing. In dry conditions the climbing is relatively easy, but if it is covered in snow the difficulty increases dramatically. In difficult conditions the ratio can only be 1 guest to 1 guide. Experience with crampons is required.
Hind Hut:
A 4 hour climb takes us from the lodge to the Hind Hut which is perched high on a cliff below the mountain The access is by climbing a steep headwall on narrow and exposed ledges call the Gmoser’s Highway. The Alpine Club of Canada built the Hut in 1971. The hut is a one room pre-fabricated arch-style building which sleeps 12-15 climbers.
